Project 4 for Illustration 2. Just turned this in a couple days ago. The assignment was to create a character design and render 3 different expressions for that character.

I didn't really go very deep with the character design. The "happy" version was the original design of the character, which came about just sketching random faces from off the top of my head. I derived the other 2 expressions from that sketch.

The design was partially an attempt to make it look as different from myself as possible. I tend to draw facial structures that are similar to my own, so I had to actually put conscious effort into making sure this guy didn't turn out resembling me in any way. I succeeded. =P

I've not much experience drawing expressions or creating character designs out of thin air, so I'll open this up to critique.

expressions are always hard... i never really learned. apparently if you learn the muscles of a human head, thats like your blueprint to drawing realistic expressions, not that yours arent, but thats what ive gathered.
Looks good though!
I would've just started with a bean shaped head and add eyes, and go from there! lol
I like the cartoony style u got, very cool!

Yeah, until I took human anatomy, I didn't really understand why I drew faces the way I did, since I was essentially just basing my faces on repetition. That, and most faces I'd drawn before then were usually Sonic characters, Wind Waker style, some sort of anime style, or drawn from photos.

So yes, understanding what muscles cause facial expression helps you make sense of all of the nuances of form that show up on faces.
